Cancer Update! For General Hospital John J. York fans! Big heartbreaking news

General Hospital Star John J. York Reveals Cancer Battle, Remains Hopeful About Recovery
Longtime General Hospital actor John J. York is opening up about a deeply personal and life-changing health battle — one he is determined to face with strength and optimism.

John J. York, beloved by fans for portraying Mac Scorpio for more than 30 years, has revealed he is currently fighting two forms of cancer. Despite decades of intense storylines on the hit ABC soap, York says nothing could have prepared him for the real-life diagnosis he received in December 2022.
According to York, he has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and multiple smoldering myeloma, two serious blood-related cancers. Speaking candidly, he shared that the news took him by surprise — but he is determined not to let the diagnosis break his spirit.
“Last December of ’22, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome or MDS and multiple smoldering myeloma,” York explained. “But I’m staying strong and positive.”
A Difficult Journey — and a Beacon of Hope
York revealed that he has undergone three bone marrow biopsies and numerous rounds of chemotherapy over recent months. While the treatments have been challenging, the actor shared a hopeful update: a potential stem cell donor has been found.
“I believe they found a perfect match, which will make me cry,” he said emotionally. “We’re going to start testing soon, and if all goes well, the transplant will happen — fingers crossed — in November.”
The actor has partnered with Be The Match, a foundation dedicated to connecting patients with life-saving blood stem cell donors. He credits the organization for providing vital support during his battle.
A Call to Action for Fans
York expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans and urged anyone willing to consider becoming a donor to look into the process.
“If there’s anybody out there that may want to be a donor, what a wonderful thing to be able to save someone’s life.”
He encouraged supporters to visit bethematch.org to learn more or register as potential donors.
A Community Rooting for His Recovery
For decades, viewers have cheered for York’s character on-screen. Now, those same fans are rallying around him in real life. His positivity, courage, and determination continue to inspire the General Hospital community and beyond.
As York prepares for the next steps in his treatment, he remains optimistic and grateful — holding firmly to hope for a successful transplant and a full recovery.
