Alaska: The Last Frontier premieres its new season on Discovery on October 7. But there are two members of the Kilcher family you won’t get to see: Jane and Atz Lee Kilcher’s children, Etienne and Piper. And that’s on purpose.

On September 8, Jane posted a note to her fans on Facebook to let them know the show would start airing in October. She also explained that she and her husband, Atz Lee, have decided to not show their children on air. “I know I’m the married in Kilcher that won’t put my kids on TV but I had a blast this year filming!” she wrote.

Fans who commented on her post largely supported her decision. “Those are YOUR kids. YOU decide what is right for them,” one commenter wrote. “If you protect your children, they don’t want to be on the show, you are a wonderfully protective mother,” another added.

Etienne and Piper haven’t been entirely absent on the show; they appeared on the very first episode. But Jane says they’ll only show up next when they want to, and when they’re ready to handle being in the public eye.

Jane Kilcher's Kids: Why They Won't Be on 'Alaska: The Last Frontier'

“I’ve been overwhelmed lately of people realizing we have children…that are not on the show,” she wrote on Facebook in January. “We are so proud of our kids, Piper 14 and Etienne 16. They are not a secret. We just keep their lives private and away from the AWFUL internet trollers, etc. But as they get older you may see them (on their own volition) on an episode or two, after I have made sure they can deal with all the craziness!”
