In a heart-wrenching start to the New Year, the fishing vessel Scandies Rose succumbed to the brutal waters of the Bering Sea. On the eve of December 31, the vessel, with seven crew members aboard, issued a distress signal before disappearing into the icy depths. The United States Coast Guard, alerted to the disaster, immediately launched a search and rescue operation from its Kodiak base.
