Angelina Jolie’s battle with cancer inspires film

Angelina Jolie’s fight against breast cancer inspired director Alice Winocour to make the film “Couture”, starring her.

The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival (Canada) on September 7, tells the story of independent director Maxine Walker, who was commissioned by a French fashion brand to make a film for a show at Paris Fashion Week. At that time, Maxine tried to balance work, motherhood and divorce proceedings. The incident occurred when the female lead discovered she had malignant breast cancer and struggled with a psychological crisis.

Although Couture does not have the appearance of a documentary or biography, Maxine’s story resonates with the actress.
In 2013, she published an article in the New York Times , revealing that she had just completed a three-month mastectomy and reconstruction of both breasts. The decision was made after she discovered she carried a faulty copy of the BRCA1 gene, which increases her risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Jolie knew the dangers because both her mother and grandmother died from the disease. Removing the affected tissue reduces the risk from 87% to less than 5%.
Director Alice Winocour said she had Angelina Jolie in mind for the lead role when she wrote the script. “I wanted to portray her as fragile but also very strong, the image of the woman behind the Hollywood icon,” Winocour said.
One of the most touching scenes in the film is when Maxine receives the news that she will have to have both breasts removed to fight the disease. The image of the doctor marking her chest with red ink symbolizes the inevitable losses that come with fighting cancer.
