According to court documents connected to Burton’s ongoing custody case with his former wife, Sheree Burton, the actor signed a three-year General Hospital contract in June. The filing also states that Burton has moved back to California permanently.

That combination makes the news especially significant. Burton is not simply back for a short return arc; the new agreement gives General Hospital substantial room to build Jason Morgan’s next chapter.

The timing matters because Burton had stepped away from the soap earlier in 2026 for what he described as a short break to spend more time with his family. His final episode before the hiatus aired on March 25.

Jason’s Prison Exit Led Straight Into a New Beginning

To explain Burton’s absence on screen, Jason was sent overseas to a WSB prison after taking responsibility for the shooting of Ross Cullum. Burton returned to work at the General Hospital studio on June 1, and Jason returned to screens on July 13.
