It came down to distance, opportunity, and an actor trying to keep two very different doors open.

Jon Lindstrom Built Two General Hospital Legacies

Lindstrom first arrived in Port Charles in 1993 as psychiatrist Kevin Collins, eventually becoming one of General Hospital’s most recognizable veteran characters.

But Kevin was only half of Lindstrom’s unusual GH history. He also portrayed Kevin’s identical twin, Ryan Chamberlain, whose violent nature stood in stark contrast to his brother’s thoughtful personality.

Ryan remained a recurring threat for decades before his story finally ended in 2023. Playing both brothers gave Lindstrom something few daytime performers ever receive: two distinct identities connected to the same fictional family, each capable of carrying major story.

That history made Kevin’s later absence difficult for longtime viewers to ignore.

Beyond the Gates Changed the Equation

The situation shifted dramatically when Lindstrom joined CBS’s Beyond the Gates as Joey Armstrong.

Taking another soap role didn’t automatically mean leaving General Hospital. Lindstrom was not locked into a situation that made appearing on both programs impossible. The real problem was geographical.

Beyond the Gates films in Atlanta, while General Hospital is produced in Los Angeles.

When Lindstrom informed GH executive producer Frank Valentini about his new job, Valentini’s response was direct: “Can you do both?”

Technically, Lindstrom could.

Practically, repeatedly traveling roughly 2,000 miles between productions made isolated GH appearances extremely difficult to coordinate.

The timing also mattered. Lindstrom has explained that Kevin had already become relatively inactive before he accepted Beyond the Gates, making the opportunity to build Joey Armstrong into a substantial new character difficult to pass up.

Kevin Collins Was Paused Rather Than Erased

General Hospital had several obvious ways to handle Lindstrom’s reduced availability. Kevin could have been recast, permanently written away, or even killed.

Instead, the show largely kept him alive off screen.

That choice preserved Kevin’s connection to Laura while allowing Lindstrom to focus on Beyond the Gates. Rather than forcing a definitive ending onto a character with decades of history, GH created room for circumstances to change.

And eventually, they did.

His December 2025 Return Proved the Door Was Still Open

After roughly a year away, Lindstrom resurfaced as Kevin on December 2, 2025.

His return placed Kevin back beside Laura during another difficult chapter of her story, giving viewers something more meaningful than a ceremonial cameo.

Just as importantly, Lindstrom’s comments surrounding the appearance suggested that his long absence had not been caused by a desire to sever ties with General Hospital.

He made clear that scheduling remained the deciding factor.

His willingness to appear again distinguished Kevin’s situation from the kind of permanent departure where an actor clearly moves on and the character’s story is definitively closed.

January Gave Kevin Another Exit Without Destroying His Future

The return was brief.

By January 5, 2026, Kevin was once again headed away from Port Charles, this time taking Ace overseas at Laura’s request as part of the story.

From a production standpoint, it offered a remarkably flexible solution. Lindstrom could return to his larger commitment as Joey Armstrong while Kevin remained alive and connected to people who matter on GH.

There was no need for a recast. No irreversible death scene. No dramatic destruction of Kevin and Laura’s relationship simply to explain an actor’s availability.

Kevin was simply somewhere else.

Kevin Collins’ General Hospital Future Comes Down to Opportunity

That distinction matters.

Nothing about Lindstrom’s situation guarantees another General Hospital appearance. Two soaps operating thousands of miles apart still create the same scheduling challenge that caused Kevin’s absence in the first place.

But his history with the show also makes this feel different from a conventional farewell.

Jon Lindstrom has already survived countless reinventions in daytime television: Kevin, Ryan, decades of changing GH stories, and now Joey Armstrong on another network. Kevin Collins may currently be outside Port Charles, but General Hospital preserved the one thing necessary for another return: possibility.

For longtime viewers, perhaps that’s the most fitting status for a character who has been part of the canvas for more than 30 years. Kevin doesn’t need to be permanently present to remain part of General Hospital’s world.

The real question isn’t whether GH gave Kevin Collins an ending.

It’s whether the next opening in Jon Lindstrom’s schedule eventually gives him another beginning.
