For two years, she’s carried the burden in silence. “My wife has undergone surgery, but this is only the beginning…” William said through tears. And then came the words that shattered hearts: “It turns out… she has…”

Prince William, 43, has offered a rare update on the health battles both his wife, Kate Middleton, 43, and father, King Charles, 76, have faced in the last two years. Both Kate and Charles shared last year that they had been diagnosed with unspecified types of cancer, which left them unable to work for some time.

It is rare for William to open up about his wife and father’s health, with the Prince of Wales making the comments during a conversation with actor Eugene Levy for his Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler. In the episode, Eugene visited Windsor Castle and asked William, “This last year, your wife and father have been ill. How are things now first of all?”

“Yes, things are good,” William responded. “Everything is progressing in the right way, which is all good news.”

However, he described 2024 as “the hardest year” he has ever experienced, adding that the media speculation felt intrusive.

“Trying to sort of balance protecting the children, Catherine, my father needs a bit of protection, but he’s, you know, he’s old enough to do that himself as well,” he shared. ”

“But it’s important my family feel protected and have the space to process a lot of the stuff that’s gone on last year, and that was tricky trying to do that and keep doing the job.”

“But you know, we all have challenges that come our way, and it’s important to keep going.”

Eugene asked if Kate was in remission, which she announced in January.

“Yes, she is,” William told him, to which Eugene said, “Which is wonderful news.”

“It’s great news, exactly,” the Prince agreed.

William also admitted that he and his family had been lucky that there hadn’t been much illness in their family prior to this.

“My grandparents lived until they were in the high nineties,” he said of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

“They were the vision of fitness, and stoicism, and resilience, if you like. So we’ve been very lucky as a family,” he added.

“But I think, when you suddenly realise that the rug… the metaphorical rug, can be pulled from under your feet quite quick at any point.”

“You maybe think to yourself, ‘It won’t happen to us, we’ll be okay.’ Because I think everyone has a positive outlook, you’ve got to be positive,” he said.

“But when it does happen to you, then it takes you into some pretty not great places.”
